Our mission

Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

Shane Mackey’s bio

Shane Mackey, blogger of the month for April, 2006, is from Michigan and operates his own research and writing business (Legal Support Staff) and has a web design business on the side (WeOwnTheWeb). He is currently attending law school at the University of the District of Columbia in Washington, DC.

Shane’s interest in public records derives from investigation which requires an understanding of state and federal “sunshine” laws (e.g., FOIA, Open Meetings Act, etc.) as well as the structure of state records systems. He recently became a card carrying member of the Library of Congress and is looking forward to an exciting summer of mulling around there as well as the National Archives.

His primary interests include politics with a penchant for middle eastern affairs in particular.
