I recently received an email from a faculty member of another university. They had found an interesting Congressional hearing/committee print from 1963 in Google Books entitled “A review of California Indian Affairs : Hearing before the Subcommittee on Indian Affairs of the Committee on Interior and Insular Affairs, House of Representatives, Eighty-eighth Congress, first session on a review of California Indian affairs. May 24, 1963.” This hearing included several important data tables and maps as foldouts that unfortunately had not been scanned in the original google books workflow. And since the scanned hearing included a stamp saying “Stanford University”, the researcher reached out to me. I found the hearing in a commercial database “Proquest Congressional,” to which their university library luckily subscribed — as well as having a print copy as a longstanding Federal Depository Library! Luckily, I knew the government information librarian at the other university and they were extremely helpful in getting this researcher connected to their library resources.
That scan was usable for this researcher’s purposes, but also of very low quality (the tables were there, but some of the edges were not scanned in the original microfiche so there was missing data). I submitted the document to our digitization lab, and they quickly and expertly scanned the entire hearing with special attention to all of the data and map foldouts. I also sent it to GPO to add to their record in the Catalog of Government Publications (CGP) — this document is already in GPO’s digitization queue so they didn’t need the Stanford copy.
