I’ve always had a thing for FRED (Federal Reserve Economic Data). And now they’re providing a free excel add-in for 290,000 data series from various sources (e.g., BEA, BLS, Census, and OECD). Thanks St Louis Fed!

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Economic Data (FRED) Add-In is free software that will significantly reduce the amount of time spent collecting and organizing macroeconomic data. The FRED add-in provides free access to over 290,000 data series from various sources (e.g., BEA, BLS, Census, and OECD) directly through Microsoft Excel.

FED study says many in debt, at risk, and cannot retire

Document of the Day. The results of a survey conducted on behalf of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System have been reported in the news recently.

Some of the findings of the report include:

  • Only 53 percent of respondents indicate that they could cover a hypothetical emergency expense costing $400 without selling something or borrowing money.
  • 23 percent of the adult population has some form of education debt.
  • 31 percent of non-retirees have no retirement savings or pension. Among lower-income respondents, 55 percent plan to keep working as long as possible or never plan to retire.

This looks to be a highly interesting conference at the Federal Reserve Bank of St Louis this September 29-30, 2014 for anyone interested in historic economic data. Keynote speakers include Hal Varian, Chief Economist at Google, and Neil Fantom, World Bank manager who leads their Open Data Initiative.

St Louis Fed is doing such great work in providing access to historic economic data so this is a great opportunity to discuss, learn, plan, and strategize for how libraries and the Fed can work collaboratively in this arena. Hope to see lots of our readers in St Louis!

We are bringing together experts to share their experiences at the frontier of economic data and information, discuss problems and potential solutions, and identify ways to improve access to and understanding of economic information.Our aim is to provide librarians and other information professionals with the knowledge, competence, and enthusiasm to disseminate economic information expertise to their respective audiences.

Economic Report of the President 2011 now available

GPO has just announced the release of the 2011 Economic Report of the President. The annual report is available online from 1996 – present via the GPO and is traditionally submitted as a House document as part of the US Serial Set (online via GPO 1985 – present. The [w:United States Congressional Serial Set] is also available historically via FDLP libraries around the country.


The Economic Report of the President, 2011 is now available from the U.S. Government Printing Office. It is issued by the Executive Office of the President and the Council of Economic Advisers and transmitted to Congress no later than ten days after the submission of the Budget of the United States Government. The Economic Report of the President is available from GPO’s Federal Digital System at:

. Documents are available in ASCII text and Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF), with many of the tables also available for separate viewing and downloading as spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel (XLS).

The Economic Report of the President includes:

1. Current and foreseeable trends and annual numerical goals concerning topics such as employment, production, real income, and Federal budget outlays;

2. Employment objectives for significant groups of the labor force;

3. Annual numeric goals;

4. And a program for carrying out program objectives.

Also included is the Annual Report of the Council of Economic Advisers.

Each year, the Council of Economic Advisers submits this report on its activities during the previous calendar year in accordance with the requirements of Congress as set forth in section 10(d) of the Employment Act of 1946 as amended by the Full Employment and Balanced Growth Act of 1978.

The Economic Report of the President, 2011 will be distributed to Federal depository libraries in paper format under:
