Our mission

Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

NSA, you know, for kids!

Doc of the day! The NSA’s website for kids! I hope someone carefully preserves this. I imagine it will be an important cultural artifact some day when we look back at the National Security Agency and the recent revelations about its spying on everyone.

And don’t forget: “Crypto Cat®, Decipher Dog®, Rosetta Stone®, Slate®, Joules™, T.Top®, CyberTwins™ Cy and Cyndi, and, of course, our leader CSS Sam®” and the associated images are trademarks of the National Security Agency”! A-and remember: NSA is committed to protecting your privacy and will collect no personal information about you unless you choose to provide that information to us“!

On Children’s Website, N.S.A. Puts a Furry, Smiley Face on Its Mission, By MICHAEL S. SCHMIDT, New York Times (JAN. 24, 2014).

T. Top and a troupe of eight other smiley-faced cartoon characters have been busy promoting the N.S.A.’s mission for the past nine years as part of a governmentwide attempt to make agencies more understandable to the public.
