Our mission

Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

Bill to mandate online access to federally funded research

A new Senate bill introduced by John Cornyn (R, Texas), would require that taxpayers receive free online access to journal articles containing federally funded research within six months of the articles’ publication. Agencies would have to preserve the manuscripts in a stable, digital repository that provides free public access, interoperability and long-term preservation.
