#nlw14 FDLP Edition Day 1: Newark, Olin and Buffalo
First up in our Federal Depository Library themed celebration of National Library Week are the 2012 winners of the Government Printing Office’s Library of the Year Award. Here’s the citation from the award page:
2012 Federal Depository Libraries of the Year
For the first time, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO) honored three extraordinary Federal Depository Libraries of the Year at the 2012 Depository Library Council Meeting and Federal Depository Library Conference.
One regional depository and two selective depositories received special recognition for going above and beyond to further the Federal Depository Library Program’s (FDLP) mission of ensuring the American public has free access to its Government’s information.
The three libraries chosen this year have demonstrated extraordinary levels of service to expand access to Federal Government collections and services.
GPO is proud to honor:
- Newark Public Library (Newark, New Jersey)
- The Olin Library at Washington University (St. Louis, Missouri)
- The University at Buffalo Libraries (Buffalo, New York)
Acting Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks presented the awards to the esteemed recipients, on behalf of GPO and the FDLP.
Newark Public Library
The Newark Public Library has served as the regional library for the other Federal depository libraries in the state of New Jersey for nearly 50 years. It was selected for making the best use of limited resources and continuing to provide excellent public services.
The Olin Library at Washington University
The Olin Library was selected for providing training opportunities to other depository librarians in the area and for collaborating with their regional depository to ensure the needs of the populous St. Louis metro area are served.
The University at Buffalo Libraries
The University at Buffalo Libraries was selected for maintaining several services which provide Federal depository libraries valuable assistance in processing U.S. Government publications received through the FDLP.
“I commend the Newark Public Library, the Olin Library, and the University at Buffalo Libraries for their contributions to the FDLP and outstanding commitment to serving their communities,” said Acting Public Printer Davita Vance-Cooks. “GPO thanks all of the Federal depository libraries for playing a critical role in providing and expanding public access to Government information.”

State Agency Databases Project Activity Report: 3/16/2014
There is a lot of activity to report at the State Agency Databases Project at http://wikis.ala.org/godort/index.php/State_Agency_Databases. Partly because I took at three week reporting break, but mostly because our volunteers have been extremely busy fixing links and adding new databases.
NEW VOLUNTEER

Today’s featured database is from Adrienne Walker, who maintains the New Mexico page:
New Mexico State Archives – The online catalog for the New Mexico State Archives is one of New Mexico’s most important historical and cultural resources. It houses records from the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government, including documents dating from New Mexico’s Spanish (1621-1821), Mexican (1821-1846), and territorial (1846-1912) periods of history. Some holdings include photograph and motion picture film. Archival holdings are vast, so cataloging is ongoing. If you cannot find what you are looking for you can contact the Archives reference desk at (505) 476-7948 or via e-mail at Archives@state.nm.us. The catalog is updated regularly.

DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (Susan Paterson)
Data Catalog – The data catalog allows you to search datasets by category such as Education, Health Care, Human Services, Infrastructure, Economic Development etc. Popular downloads include crime incidents and public space permits and purchase orders.
GEORGIA (Chris Sharpe)
Project Search – Search for past, present, rejected, deferred, and proposed transportation related projects in Georgia.
Chris also did some major link fixing.
INDIANA (Stephanie Martin)
Indiana Recreation Interactive Map – Searchable by site name, type, and county. You can then click on the site on the map to see more details (phone number, website, directions, and activities). Sample Search: State Parks (type) in Brown (County).
KANSAS (Pam Crawford)
Lesson Plans and Other Resources – This Kansas Educational Resource Center site offers resource-type, topic and/or grade-level searching.
Missouri Crime Victims’ Compensation Program Statistics Map – From the web site: This “map provides comparative statistical information for FY 2013, FY 2012, and FY 2011 that includes the number of new claims, claims paid, claims denied, award amounts, restitution refunded to CVC and deposits into the fund.”
NORTH DAKOTA (Susanne Caro)
North Dakota Century Code -The North Dakota Century Code on this website contain currently effective laws of North Dakota changes approved by the 63rd Legislative Assembly are now reflected on this website. Sections of law with expiration dates or delayed effective dates are indicated in the Section caption.
Susanne recently took on North Dakota as a second state and has done some extensive link revising in the last quarter.
WYOMING (Karen Kitchens)
Wyoming State Publications Online – This digital library contains publications produced by Wyoming governmental agencies. The bulk of the publications currently available online range from 1998 to present.
ADDITIONS TO NOT DATABASES
The purpose of the State Agency Databases Project is to discover and annotate publicly searchable databases produced by state agencies. Along the way we discover really good stuff that is either not a database or not produced by a state agency. Rather than simply discard this material, we park it on our Not Databases Page. Here’s a new addition to the Georgia section of the page:
Physician Workforce Reports – “Provide interested individuals with a snapshot of the current condition of the physician workforce across the state. It is intended for use in a variety of ways and is presented in a manner that should help individuals monitor changes in this workforce and assess its current capacity.” Includes 3 reports: Basic physician report, Physician need report, and Facility report.

FEATURED DATABASE
Today’s featured database was suggested by Annie Moots, the volunteer for Missouri:
Missouri Appellate Courts and Missouri Supreme Court Opinions (http://www.courts.mo.gov/page.
jsp?id=12086&dist=Opinions) This database contains the full-text opinions, including concurring and dissenting opinions, of the Missouri Eastern, Western, and Southern Districts Courts of Appeals and the Missouri Supreme Court back to 1997. It is searchable by court, opinion, or date. Other information includes a summary of the opinion, the case name and number, attorneys for the parties, the court or commission from which the case was appealed, the name of the judge who authored the opinion, and the vote.

These pages weren’t officially orphaned. But the new volunteers seemed like a better fit for the states involved. I’m particularly happy to give Arizona to someone actually working in Arizona.

Transparent Idaho – Transparent Idaho makes the State of Idaho’s finances and operations more transparent by providing a highly accurate look at the state’s budget, revenues, and spending, and how they have changed over the last 3-5 years. Also included are various financial reports and links to other information about state operations and local spending in Idaho.
Missouri (Annie Moots)
State Tax Commission Legal Decisions – Search by year and keyword back to 2001.
New Jersey (Stephanie Bartz)
Salvage-Titled and Flood-Titled Vehicles – “Contains information about vehicles that have been issued salvage or flood titles since October 30, 2012.” Explains what flood and salvage titles mean and identifies the vehicles that have been classified with those titles since Hurricane Sandy.
New York (Michael Tatonetti)
OASAS Provider Directory Search] – Find Prevention and Treatment providers for alcohol and substance abuse addicts in New York. Searchable by county, region, city, ZIP code or do a statewide search. Provides information on programs, addresses and contact information of treatment centers.

State Agency Databases Activity Report 1/5/2014
2013 ended with a good amount of activity at the State Agency Databases Project at http://wikis.ala.org/godort/index.php/State_Agency_Databases.
As we start a new year, I wanted to introduce a new feature into these reports – the Featured Database. The other volunteers and I will offer one database each week we think is especially worthwhile.
FEATURED DATABASE
Today’s featured database was suggested by Samantha Hager, our documents specialist for Colorado:
Colorado Health Information Dataset (http://www.chd.dphe.state.co.
us/cohid/Default.aspx ) From the website, “allows access to local-level health data compiled by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment to help users determine the health status of a neighborhood, community, county, or region in Colorado.”
Includes statistics on births, deaths, population, behavioral risk factors, birth defects, cancer incidences, pregnancy risk assessment monitoring systems, injuries and tobacco attitudes and behaviors.

PROJECT STATISTICS
Project statistics for 2011 through 2013 have been posted to the project home page. A few highlights from 2013:
Our state pages received 152,508 visits in 2013. The most popular state was Missouri with 15,257 visits.
Our subject pages received 18,755 visits in 2013. The Prisoner Locater Tools page was first with 6,723 visits but the combined visits for Health Practitioner pages was a close second with 6,500 visits.
Overall, visits were down in 2013 compared to 2012, but still over 2011 levels. Missouri bucked the trend by increasing visits, as did Kansas, Montana, and South Carolina.

Because it’s been so long since my last report and because this current report has been lengthy, I’ll skip any effort at specific database adds. Over the past month, these states have shown the most update activity:

Other Transparency Measures
Yesterday, I posted an entry about Maryland’s new accountability website. There are other states and non-profits that have taken similar efforts. The ones that I came across are:
On 01/05/09, Georgia launched the Open Georgia: Transparency in Government – Not only does it provide information, but also solicits feedback from the public.
On 01/01/09, Kentucky started the Open Door: Kentucky’s Portal to eTransparency. There are plans to provide a new Budget Builder Game and also educational materials.
