Our mission

Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

Oliver North, The Smithsonian, Abe Lincoln, Presidential Timeline, and more!

The current edition of the National Coalition For History newsletter (NCH WASHINGTON UPDATE (Vol. 13, #6; February 16, 2007)) has several interesting items including:

  • OLIVER NORTH vs. THE SMITHSONIAN
The Smithsonian/Showtime deal leads to political controversy and a editorial (Selling America’s heritage By Oliver North, February 11, 2007 ) in the Washington Times.
  • NATIONAL ARCHIVES ANNOUNCES PRESIDENTIAL TIMELINE WEBSITE
A new website, www.presidentialtimeline.org with digitized artifacts and historical archives from all of the U.S. presidential libraries.
  • HONEST, IT WASN’T ABE’S COMMENT
Thousands of supporters of the Iraq war including a member of Congress in the Congressional Record are quoting words that Abraham Lincoln never said and attributing the words to Lincoln. See: Honest, It Wasn’t Abe’s Comment by Mary Ann Akers, Washington Post, February 16, 2007; Page A21.
