Our mission

Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

How Government Data Is Fueling a New Economy

NextGov, the online technology newsletter from the same media company that publishes The Atlantic magazine and National Journal, is launching a new project to profile companies and nonprofits that are building their businesses with government data. The first two companies are Panjiva, which pays to get U.S. customs data overnighted on CD-ROMs because the data doesn’t go online quickly enough, and WeMakeItSafer, which creates tailored data feeds about product recalls by transforming government human-readable press releases into computer-actionable data.
