Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. A three-person team at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, however, has demonstrated how one approach can make greater use of the massive sets of data available on Data.gov, using the power of the semantic web. The conversion project has shown how quickly and inexpensively visualization and mash-up applications can be built from government data when it’s put into a web-friendly form.
