Our mission

Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

First in the nation state government podcast?

The Delaware Public Archives, part of the Delaware State Government does a podcast of its This Day in Delaware Historyseries.

To my limited knowledge, this is the only state government sponsored podcast out there. Does anyone know of others?

It would be nice if the Government Printing Office could start doing podcasts of either Bruce James or Judy Russell giving us a five minute rundown each week of new developments at GPO and/or the Federal Depository Library Program. Or even have the folks at the Office of Innovation and New Technology create a blog for them.

  1. Arden,

Thanks for posting on FGI and letting us know about the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau podcasts. I admire your agency because you seem to put technology to use pretty quickly in ways others should emulate.

For example, the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau also provide RSS Feeds of the publications they produce, making it easy for anyone to harvest and store their publications while staying current on research.

Thanks again for letting us know you’ve hit another milestone. Do you have any usage statistics yet for the podcasts?

  2. The Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau has been creating podcasts since March 2 of this year. Most of our podcasts are summaries of our publications on various public policy issues or elements of the Wisconsin constitution. All of the podcasts are 5-7 minutes. Once the state budget has passed later this summer, we hope to continue creating new podcasts about once a week. Our Bureau chief, Steve Miller, spearheaded this initiative. We are the first Wisconsin agency to create podcasts.
