Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

“To reduce the $1.8 million in printing and mailing costs associated with Package X and to support the agency’s transition to electronic media and communications, the IRS said that Package X will become obsolete in the summer of 2005….

“Individual tax products are available online at http://www.irs.gov and from other commercial and government sources. Publication 1796, IRS Tax Products (a CD-ROM equivalent to Package X) is sold by both the Superintendent of Documents under the Government Printing Office and the National Technical Information System under the U .S. Department of Commerce.”
