MuckRock’s FOIA redaction hall of shame
In honor of Sunshine week, MuckRock has put together their FOIA Hall of Shame. These would be incredibly funny if they weren’t so egregious and if I didn’t know just how the FOIA submitter felt when she received her completely inadequate response to a FOIA request. Unfortunately, the FOIA law deals only with release of documents, it says nothing about legibility.
If you only have a hammer, then every problem looks like a nail – and as we’ve learned over the years from many an overenthusiastic FOIA officer, if you only have a Sharpie, then every document looks classified. As part of our Sunshine Week coverage, we put together a list of the most ridiculous redactions we’ve (un)seen.
