First comprehensive federal report on women since 1963

Last week, the White House released the first comprehensive federal report on women since 1963.

By bringing together data from across the Federal government, the report is one of most comprehensive sources for information on women’s lives today. This is the first such federal initiative since 1963, when the Commission on Status of Women, established by President Kennedy and chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt, produced a report on the conditions of women.

It provides a two-page narrative introduction for each of five broad topics (demographic and family changes, education, employment, health, and crime and violence), followed by a single page for each of the many indicators. With the “Detailed Sources and Notes” it provides a virtual index to detailed information from many agencies.

“This report provides a statistical picture of women in America in five critical areas: demographic and family changes, education, employment, health, and crime and violence. By presenting a quantitative snapshot of the well-being of American women based on Federal data, the report greatly enhances our understanding both of how far American women have come and the areas where there is still work to be done.”
