Our mission

Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

Historians’ access to government documents increasingly difficult

A report by the Organization of American Historians OAH Committee on Academic Freedom notes that “the last two presidential administrations have made historians” access to government documents increasingly difficult.” It also notes “direct efforts by the federal administration and by foundations and web sites that support it to shape the content of teaching and research in directions favorable to its policies.”
