U.S Department of Labor, Facebook, and Others Announce Partnership

Via INFOdocket: From a DOL News Release: Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis today announced an innovative partnership that leverages the combined audience and expertise of officials from the U.S. Department of Labor, Facebook, the National Association of State Workforce Agencies, DirectEmployers Association and the National Association of Colleges and Employers to provide crucial employment resources to job seekers through the use of social networks. [Clip] As part of the announcement, Facebook officials debuted a "social jobs partnership" page that highlights available training programs, educational opportunities and job search resources, which can be accessed at http://www.facebook.com/socialjobs. Facebook also made a commitment to drive traffic to the page through targeted online public service announcements that will appear to users in geographic areas experiencing high unemployment. In the coming months, public and private-sector partners who have committed to helping Americans find jobs through resources and technology will be added. How are Government Agencies Doing with Gov 2.0?

From Mark Drapeau via O'Reilly Radar this excellent critique of government's use of Facebook. He thinks agencies may have signed up lots of Facebook fans but they aren't participating in the collaborative culture:

But it's not novel and it's not social and it's not engaging. The execution is flawed, the tactics are questionable, the strategy is vague, and the goals are unclear. And all the government pages in the top 10 list effectively look the same. Monkey-see, monkey-do.

Twitter, Facebook, and Scholarly Communication

An article in Scholarly Kitchen does a good job of comparing and contrasting Twitter and Facebook and addressing the utility of Twitter for scholarly communication. As the article says, "...a network that is open and content-centric has advantages. This is particularly true, for example, for scholarly and scientific communications." I think there is a parallel here for government information providers.
