Live blogging DLC
Hi all. I just landed in Washington D.C. and gearing up for Depository Library Council meeting for the next three days. I'm trying out this new tool called CoverItLive that will allow me to live blog the conference (if you want to help, let me know and I'll add you as a panelist!!). Please check back here as the window below will *hopefully* be in real time. This also depends on wireless access. Check out the meeting agenda and leave me a comment if there's anything from which you really want a report. Wish me luck!

"collections" and "services"
James,
thanks for your live comments!
I will look forward to hearing more about the thread outlined here of collections vs. services. My own initial thoughts are:
- this should not be an "either/or" argument or plan or discussion.
- the role of the government, first and foremost, must be to instantiate the information so that it can be used and reused by citizens, now and in the future.
- one key "service" that gpo and agencies should provide *first* is open access to all content. that means open formats, no DRM or licensing restrictions, and open APIs, complete search-engine visibility, direct and permanent and transparent linking, as well as interfaces designed for one-human-at-a-time. This should be designed to make it easy for human and machines to locate and acquire content at many levels of granularity (fact, single "page," "book"/report/document, raw data files, etc.)
- if gpo and other agencies are flush with money and want to provide additional services, that would be fine too.
- all services, by GPO or agencies or FDLP libraries or others, will depend on content. the content must be openly available and usable. (i'm repeating myself here intentionally; different context.) everyone (not just libraries or fdlp libraries or "partners") needs to be able to select, acquire, organize, and preserve the content.
i cover a bit of the differences between e-gov services and instantiation of information in collections in my SAA talk http://freegovinfo.info/saa
Good thoughts
Hi Jim. thanks for the input. I'm in agreement and will certainly ask these questions early and often :-)
If only we had a tip jar ..
If we had a tip jar here at FGI, I'd be dumping enough quarters in to make it overflow!
THANKS JRJ and RB. You're doing a great job with this. James, thanks for seeking out a technology that seems to be going great. And thanks to you both for being able to pay attention and blog at the same time. Not a talent I have.
RB - The Cooking with Gov Docs video actually was made by Sarah Gewirtz. But I agree it's way cool that it's found its way into a guide!
Keep up the great work. Almost like being there.

FDsys Search Demonstrations
As a follow up to the DLC coverage, GPO is posting short video demonstrations of FDsys on YouTube. These demonstrations are divided into parts based on the type of search performed. The demonstrations for simple search (part 1) and advanced search (part 2) have been posted and can be accessed at http://www.youtube.com/USGPO. Additional videos will be added in the coming weeks.
