Social Media and “Citizen Archivists” at NARA
The National Archives and Records Administration is active in using social media. It also recently announced its intention to create a “Citizen Archivist Dashboard that will encourage the public to pitch in via social media tools on a number of our projects.”

Access to records in this century means digital access. For many people, if it is not online, it doesn’t exist. The use of social media to increase access is the new norm. NARA has been going after innovative tools and projects that increase digital access to our records, including projects that invite public participation. We are developing a Citizen Archivist Dashboard that will encourage the public to pitch in via social media tools on a number of our projects. You will hear about these and more of our projects at next week’s McGowan Forum, “What’s Next in the Social Media Revolution.”

The National Archives and Records Administration plans to launch in December an online Citizen Archivist Dashboard through which volunteers can tag, transcribe and write articles about scanned NARA documents, said Pamela Wright, the agency’s chief digital access strategist.

GovLoop.com: Facebook for federal employees
GovLoop says it is the “premier social network connecting the government community.” It is intended for anyone who is a: “gov’t employee (fed/state/local/intl), public policy student/professor, good gov’t organization, or gov’t contractor with good intentions.” TechInsider reports that it has 10,000 members. A press release from GovLoop says,
GovLoop (http://govloop.com), an online community created for and by government employees, announced today it has signed up its 10,000th member less than a year after launching. Dubbed by some as a “Facebook for Feds,” GovLoop brings together government employees from the U.S. and other nations to discuss ideas, share best practices and create a community dedicated to the betterment of government.
GSA allows agencies to use commerical social networking sites
GSA signs deals for agencies to use social networking sites, By Jill R. Aitoro, NextGov, 03/25/2009.
After nine months of negotiations, the General Services Administration signed agreements with four video-sharing and social networking sites: Flickr, Vimeo, blip.tv and YouTube. GSA also is negotiating with the social networking sites Facebook and MySpace.
…At least 17 agencies have signed, or are in the process of signing….
State Department’s Social Networking Site: ExchangesConnect
The U.S. Department of State has launched a new web site, ExchangesConnect (connect.state.gov), to promote international exchanges and enhance the United States’ image abroad, particularly among young people. ExchangesConnect is administered by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. According to the Washington Post, “It’s a new online home for Americans and Web users overseas interested in interacting with other participants or potential participants in U.S. educational or foreign exchange programs.” Use of the site requires registration. LOCKSS Group on Facebook
If you’re a member of Facebook and a fan of Lots of Copies Keep Stuff Safe (LOCKSS), then you should join the LOCKSS group on Facebook. If you’re not on Facebook, then check out the main LOCKSS web site at http://www.lockss.org or read some of our coverage about LOCKSS.
So far the Facebook group has 31 members, including some members of the LOCKSS team. Check it out if you can, if only to get your friends intrigued by LOCKSS.
