Our mission

Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

Good explanation of the semantic web

If you wonder what “the semantic web” is, this is a good, short article to read.

Why should this be of interest to government information specialists? As Riza says, semantic search engines will be much better at finding relevant items for “long-tail queries.” Search engines like Google work well with searches that seek popular information for which there are lots of links pointing to popular pages. But if you or your library users are doing research on arcane topics and not on movie stars, you are doing “long tail queries.” Semantic search engines will do better than current search engines for questions that are longer, more complex, and that aren’t just seeking information that is “popular.”
