Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

Inexpensive courses in “data journalism”

This may be of interest to those government information specialists who also have an interest in or responsibility for data. Dave Stanton, creator of For Journalism is developing inexpensive online courses in data science, statistics, mapping, charting, and in using specific tools such as Ruby on Rails and Python. Although explicitly aimed at journalists, the courses would probably provide a good introduction to each topic for anyone interested in the practical aspects of using government data.

    [C]ourse teaches toward a practical news-application project. We’re trying to set scope to allow for one of these courses to be taught as a semester-long university course or as multi-day workshop. Each will include: an ebook, screencasts, code repositories, and forums.

    Courses cost $20 each, making it affordable for journalism students and professional journalists looking to brush up on their coding skills.

    For Journalism is an effort to equip every student, mid-career journalist, professor and graduate student with the knowledge they need to learn technical skills for doing journalism.
