This week’s State Agency Databases Project subject highlight is Statistics, Data & Mapping/GIS, featuring 40 states that project volunteers know to have publicly searchable databases in this subject area. Three examples from this compilation are:
Alabama Geologic Mapping – Browse geological maps or search by keyword.
Maine.gov Data Share – catalog of various public data sets that includes access to online data search tools, or the “raw” data in CSV (comma-separated) and/or KML formats. The purpose of Maine.gov DataShare is to provide easy access to public data, increase government transparency, and to encourage public participation and collaboration in government. By making data readily available for research, analysis, and development of web tools and applications, to encourage new and creative approaches to the data. Includes a gallery of user-created mashups based on these datasets.
Applications Catalog – The Applications Catalog contains links to all public-facing interactive mapping applications developed/maintained by state agencies in Washington.

Military & Veterans at State Agency Databases Project
This week’s State Agency Databases Project subject highlight is Military & Veterans, featuring 22 states that project volunteers know to have publicly searchable databases in this subject area. Three examples from this compilation are:
Alabama Civil War Service Database – Search Civil War service records by name, branch, company unit, regiment unit, or co. unit name.
Service Provider Search by Location – A searchable database of services available to California veterans, their survivors and dependents at the federal, state and local levels. It includes federal, state and county veterans offices, contact information for veterans organizations, services available for homeless veterans, veterans offices at educational institutions and other veterans-related material, searchable by keyword, location, and type of service.
Wisconsin Veterans Memorial Catalog – Documents memorials dedicated to Wisconsin veterans throughout Wisconsin, the U.S., and internationally. The Wisconsin Veterans Museum Research Center actively maintains this resource which includes the history, physical condition, and location of each memorial.

This week’s State Agency Databases Project subject highlight is History, People & Culture, featuring 49 states that project volunteers know to have publicly searchable databases in this subject area. Three examples from this compilation are:
Alabama 1867 Voter Registration Database – Search the 131 volumes of the 1867 Voter Registration Records, which was one of the first statewide government documents that record African-American males living in Alabama. Search by name, race, county, or comments.
Death Notices of Members of Fraternal Orders – Database includes over 50,000 individuals for whom a notice of death was published in the proceedings of a fraternal order. Fraternal orders included and dates of coverage are: Ancient Order of United Workmen, 1879-1908; Knights of Pythias, 1877-1918; Independent Order of Odd Fellows, 1873-1970; Rebekah Assembly of the IOOF, 1891-1953
Wyoming Newspapers – Wyoming State Library – Available through this website are newspapers printed in Wyoming beginning with the 1849 Chugg Water Journal, in an easily searchable format. Browse or search the more than 900,000 newspaper pages converted from microfilm to a digital format. All text is searchable, including news articles, news briefs, obituaries and other items of interest.

Local Alabama Government Search – Search for local officials by zip code or place name.
Louisiana Boards and Commissions Database – This database is searchable by the name of the commission, board or by name of an individual member. It includes names of all the members on the board or commission, a contact address and phone number, appointed date (if available), and expiration date of term (if available).
Tennessee State phone directory – Search for state employees or state offices.

Earth & the Environment at State Agency Databases Project
This week’s State Agency Databases Project subject highlight is Earth & the Environment, featuring 44 states that project volunteers know to have publicly searchable databases in this subject area. Three examples from this compilation are:
Alabama Drought Conditions – Enter your zip code to view drought conditions in your area.
Abandoned-Inactive Mines Database – The Abandoned-Inactive Mines (AIM) database contains over 8,000 records and includes several data tables that include information on location (latitude/longitude and cadastral), ownership (as determined from 1:24,000-scale maps, GPS, or other sources), office and field screening results, and water/soil sampling (sample-ID, location, and field parameters). Login is required but is free.
Wisconsin Herbaria Plant Specimen Database – Over 250,000 records for Wisconsin’s vascular plants. Searchable by name, genus, species, location, habitat, and more. Created by the Wisconsin State Herbarium.
