Our mission

Free Government Information (FGI) is a place for initiating dialogue and building consensus among the various players (libraries, government agencies, non-profit organizations, researchers, journalists, etc.) who have a stake in the preservation of and perpetual free access to government information. FGI promotes free government information through collaboration, education, advocacy and research.

Who should disseminate gov’t PR?

It bears reminding that government information comes to us in many forms. In addition to journals, reports, studies, etc; many government agencies have “public information officers” and/or contract for education campaigns.

Recently the Forest Service announced a plan to outsource about a 100 FS jobs to private PR firms. The PR, tech-oriented podcast For Immediate Release has a discussion of this initiative on FIR #30 – fast forward to 36min 43sec for the Forest Service discussion.
