GPO Relases Draft Report on Regionals

Taking another step towards the larger discussion, GPO announced the release of its "Regional Depository Libraries in the 21st Century: A Preliminary Assessment", was delivered to the JCP and is now available on the FDLP Desktop.

Add to your reading list as we enter this season of national library conferences.

Remember, a depository library program would be a terrible thing to waste....

Here's the link to "Regional Depository Libraries in the 21st Century: A Preliminary Assessment". I'm pleased that GPO also included related documentation in addition to the document itself.

I agree with John that a "depository library program is a terrible thing to waste" (images of frying eggs run through my mind :-) ). It will take some time to absorb all the documentation, but I'd like to submit one other piece of evidence to the pool: "Government Information in the Digital Age: The Once and Future Federal Depository Library Program".

We've argued long and hard for a 21st century FDLP based on distributed digital deposit and collaborative digital collections (think Napster or Peer-to-peer (P2P) for govt documents!); we've defined our terms and technical requirements (hopefully clearly), shown the exciting possibilities both for libraries and the public (see the FGI library for our related documentation). Only by expanding our ideas about what the FDLP *could* be will we truly create an FDLP worthy of continuing into the 21st century and beyond.
