Planned Launch of GPO's Federal Digital System (Fdsys)
The first public release of GPO’s Federal Digital System (FDsys) http://www.gpo.gov/projects/fdsys.htm will launch later this year. Staff in the Superintendent of Documents Library Services and Content Management unit at GPO have been working with GPO's Program Management Office who are responsible for developing this system. We want to ensure that the requirements for the Federal Depository Library Program will be met.
In order to ensure that we are accurately communicating the requirements capabilities of the system, we are requesting your feedback. Based on your knowledge of FDsys, what are your expectations for the first public release? We want to make sure we continue to get this information in the hands of the development team and keep lines of communications open. Additional information should be also be shared with GPO's Program Management Office at pmo@gpo.gov

FGI Writings on FDSys
Hi Ric,
As you're probably aware, we FGI volunteers have had a lot to say about FDSys over the years. You can find our postings at http://freegovinfo.info/taxonomy/term/439.
One of the posts refers to a March demo video of FDSys where I complained about the search defaulting to "OR". I'm happy to say this problem was fixed in the most recent demo I saw of FDSys.

"And besides all that, what we need is a decentralized, distributed system of depositing electronic files to local libraries willing to host them." -- Daniel Cornwall, tipping his hat to Cato the Elder for the original quote.
supplemental documentation
I am sure that there will be a number of in-person training sessions for using FDsys, but I hope GPO makes other training avenues available, both at the launch and as more releases provide further functionality:
- One or more OPAL presentations that give a functional overview of the system.
- Short Flash videos that show how to complete specific, close-ended tasks.
- PDFs showing how to complete certain tasks. Some of these could be geared toward users who are familiar with CGP.
- A Q&A database (or better yet, a wiki), so that as our community learns to use this tool, we can build our knowledge together and in doing so provide feedback for subsequent versions.
I know that this can't all be rolled out at once, but I hope it is part of the planning process for how GPO unveils this new project. Thank you for taking the time to solicit our input!
